Welcome to Our New Studio Artist – Matthew Webber
Since moving to London in the late 1990s, Matthew Webber has made his art wherever space allowed it. From dedicated studios in Hackney’s creative heartland, to the back of his vintage camper, or the box room in his family home, the drive to paint has occasionally made for some unusual improvised locations.
Occasional limitations have dictated the work. His ‘Miniature’ series was developed when space was at a premium. His most representational series of landscape paintings was produced when his mobile studio was a VW van parked in the forest.
Now, though, as Matthew’s work has grown in scale, he finds himself in the enviable position of having two studios in which to make his abstracted landscape paintings. One is a purpose-built studio space in the garden of his home in Aldersbrook. The other is a beautiful room on the second floor right here at Valentines Mansion.
“I started looking for more space earlier this year when my painting practice – which includes some very messy processes – started spilling out of my studio in a way that wasn’t going to be practical in the long term. Now I do the messy and destructive stuff at home, while the actual painting and drawing happens in my space at the Mansion.”
